HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. ____
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing April as
2 Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
3 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
4 Whereas, Parkinson's disease, which affects up to
5 approximately 20,000 people in Indiana and nearly 1 million
6 people in the United States, is a chronic and progressive
7 neurological disease caused by a lack of the chemical
8 dopamine in the brain;
9 Whereas, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of
10 death in the United States and has an estimated annual total
11 cost of $51.9 billion per year, split evenly between medical
12 costs and non-medical costs, such as lost wages and caregiver
13 time and expenses;
14 Whereas, It is important to educate Hoosiers about the
15 symptoms of Parkinson's disease, including tremors, rigidity
16 and bradykinesia (slow movement), postural instability,
17 shuffling gait, speech and swallowing disturbances, cognitive
18 impairment and dementia, and difficulty with fine hand
19 movements;
20 Whereas, Since not everyone with Parkinson's disease has all
21 of the associated symptoms, careful diagnosis is essential;
22 Whereas, Research suggests that the cause of Parkinson's
23 disease is a combination of environmental and genetic factors,
24 and at this time there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt
25 the progression of the disease;
2024	HC 1032/DI 140 2
1 Whereas, There currently is no objective test to diagnose
2 Parkinson's disease, and available treatments are limited in
3 their ability to address patients' medical needs and remain
4 effective over time;
5 Whereas, Volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical
6 professionals are working to improve the quality of life of
7 persons living with Parkinson's disease and their families; and
8 Whereas, Increased research, education, and community
9 support services are needed to find more effective treatments
10 and to provide access to quality care to those living with the
11 disease today: Therefore,
12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
13 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
14 the Senate concurring:
15 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
16 April as Parkinson's Awareness Month and April 11, 2024, as
17 Parkinson's Awareness Day.
18 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
19 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
20 Representative Carey Hamilton for distribution.
