44 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, Caesar Kleberg contributed immeasurably to the Lone
66 Star State through his unwavering dedication to its wildlife; and
77 WHEREAS, Born in Cuero in 1873, Mr. Kleberg spent more than
88 four decades living and working on the King Ranch in South Texas;
99 passionate about wildlife and their habitats, he wrote rules about
1010 game and hunting and, around 1940, urged his uncle and the ranch's
1111 president and CEO Bob Kleberg, Jr., to hire the first wildlife
1212 biologist to be employed by a working cattle ranch in Texas; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Kleberg's influence was also felt at the Texas
1414 Parks and Wildlife Department, where he served for 20 years and
1515 helped to save the state's diminishing population of wild turkeys;
1616 and
1717 WHEREAS, Since the death of this visionary man in 1946, the
1818 Caesar Kleberg Foundation for Wildlife Conservation has funded more
1919 than $40 million in wildlife research projects at Texas
2020 institutions of higher learning; the foundation has also created
2121 endowed chairs, directors, and professorships at Texas A&M
2222 University campuses in College Station and Kingsville, as well as
2323 at Texas Tech University, and provided financial support for more
2424 than 250 wildlife science graduate students; in 1981, a grant from
2525 the foundation established the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research
2626 Institute, which has become one of the leading wildlife research
2727 programs in the country; and
2828 WHEREAS, The late Caesar Kleberg was recognized in 2006 with
2929 a Texas Legends Award from the National Fish and Wildlife
3030 Foundation for his commitment to the conservation and management of
3131 the state's natural resources; and
3232 WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Caesar Kleberg worked
3333 tirelessly in behalf of our wildlife resources, and his
3434 accomplishments continue to benefit generations of Texans; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
3737 hereby honor the legacy of Caesar Kleberg and pay tribute to the
3838 lasting impact of his efforts.
