5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Caesar Kleberg contributed immeasurably to the Lone |

6 | 6 | | Star State through his unwavering dedication to its wildlife; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Born in Cuero in 1873, Mr. Kleberg spent more than |
---|
8 | 8 | | four decades living and working on the King Ranch in South Texas; |
---|
9 | 9 | | passionate about wildlife and their habitats, he wrote rules about |
---|
10 | 10 | | game and hunting and, around 1940, urged his uncle and the ranch's |
---|
11 | 11 | | president and CEO Bob Kleberg, Jr., to hire the first wildlife |
---|
12 | 12 | | biologist to be employed by a working cattle ranch in Texas; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Kleberg's influence was also felt at the Texas |
---|
14 | 14 | | Parks and Wildlife Department, where he served for 20 years and |
---|
15 | 15 | | helped to save the state's diminishing population of wild turkeys; |
---|
16 | 16 | | and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Since the death of this visionary man in 1946, the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Caesar Kleberg Foundation for Wildlife Conservation has funded more |
---|
19 | 19 | | than $40 million in wildlife research projects at Texas |
---|
20 | 20 | | institutions of higher learning; the foundation has also created |
---|
21 | 21 | | endowed chairs, directors, and professorships at Texas A&M |
---|
22 | 22 | | University campuses in College Station and Kingsville, as well as |
---|
23 | 23 | | at Texas Tech University, and provided financial support for more |
---|
24 | 24 | | than 250 wildlife science graduate students; in 1981, a grant from |
---|
25 | 25 | | the foundation established the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research |
---|
26 | 26 | | Institute, which has become one of the leading wildlife research |
---|
27 | 27 | | programs in the country; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The late Caesar Kleberg was recognized in 2006 with |
---|
29 | 29 | | a Texas Legends Award from the National Fish and Wildlife |
---|
30 | 30 | | Foundation for his commitment to the conservation and management of |
---|
31 | 31 | | the state's natural resources; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Caesar Kleberg worked |
---|
33 | 33 | | tirelessly in behalf of our wildlife resources, and his |
---|
34 | 34 | | accomplishments continue to benefit generations of Texans; now, |
---|
35 | 35 | | therefore, be it |

36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

37 | 37 | | hereby honor the legacy of Caesar Kleberg and pay tribute to the |
