5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly |

6 | 6 | | cause for celebration, and Roy Earl Reed, Sr., aka "Poppie," of |
---|
7 | 7 | | Brownsville reached that notable milestone in his life on September |
---|
8 | 8 | | 11, 2008; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, One of seven children, Roy Reed was born in |
---|
10 | 10 | | Brownsville in 1928 in a double bed in his family's wood-framed |
---|
11 | 11 | | house at 625 East Jefferson, known affectionately as "the Estate"; |
---|
12 | 12 | | he lettered in football at Brownsville High School and played in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | memorable North vs. South Texas game of 1947; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Reed attended Texas A&M University on a football |
---|
15 | 15 | | scholarship; when a knee injury sidelined him, he put himself |
---|
16 | 16 | | through school by working a variety of jobs; he became a proud |
---|
17 | 17 | | member of the Corps of Cadets, serving as company commander of A |
---|
18 | 18 | | Troop Cavalry during his senior year; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from Texas A&M in 1951 with a |
---|
20 | 20 | | degree in agricultural administration, Mr. Reed answered his |
---|
21 | 21 | | nation's call to duty as a member of the armed forces during the |
---|
22 | 22 | | Korean War; for many years, he has been in the cattle business in |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas and Mexico; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was joined in matrimony to his high school |
---|
25 | 25 | | sweetheart, Jo Anne Glenn, and their enduring union has been an |
---|
26 | 26 | | inspiration to all who know them; he has been a devoted father to |
---|
27 | 27 | | his five children, Randolph R. Reed, Roy E. Reed, Jr., Jayne Anne |
---|
28 | 28 | | Davis, Cynthia Jean Mills, and Roman F. Reed, and he has been |
---|
29 | 29 | | further blessed with the love and respect of his 16 grandchildren |
---|
30 | 30 | | and many nieces and nephews; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, Roy Reed has remained firm in his |
---|
32 | 32 | | loyalty to his family, his faith, his nation, and his alma mater, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and it is a pleasure to recognize his hard work and dedication as he |
---|
34 | 34 | | enters his ninth decade; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas |

36 | 36 | | hereby congratulate Roy Earl Reed, Sr., on his 80th birthday and |

37 | 37 | | extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness and |
