H.C.R. No. 134 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The 80th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly cause for celebration, and Roy Earl Reed, Sr., aka "Poppie," of Brownsville reached that notable milestone in his life on September 11, 2008; and WHEREAS, One of seven children, Roy Reed was born in Brownsville in 1928 in a double bed in his family's wood-framed house at 625 East Jefferson, known affectionately as "the Estate"; he lettered in football at Brownsville High School and played in the memorable North vs. South Texas game of 1947; and WHEREAS, Mr. Reed attended Texas A&M University on a football scholarship; when a knee injury sidelined him, he put himself through school by working a variety of jobs; he became a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, serving as company commander of A Troop Cavalry during his senior year; and WHEREAS, After graduating from Texas A&M in 1951 with a degree in agricultural administration, Mr. Reed answered his nation's call to duty as a member of the armed forces during the Korean War; for many years, he has been in the cattle business in Texas and Mexico; and WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was joined in matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Jo Anne Glenn, and their enduring union has been an inspiration to all who know them; he has been a devoted father to his five children, Randolph R. Reed, Roy E. Reed, Jr., Jayne Anne Davis, Cynthia Jean Mills, and Roman F. Reed, and he has been further blessed with the love and respect of his 16 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Roy Reed has remained firm in his loyalty to his family, his faith, his nation, and his alma mater, and it is a pleasure to recognize his hard work and dedication as he enters his ninth decade; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate Roy Earl Reed, Sr., on his 80th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness and fulfillment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Reed as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
