5	5	WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG)
6	6	is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Established as a public nonprofit organization by
8	8	the Texas Legislature in 1979, TG was created to administer a
9	9	guaranteed student loan program that would help qualified Texans
10	10	receive a postsecondary education and also to provide related
11	11	services; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Among the loan programs that TG administers is the
13	13	Federal Family Education Loan Program, which accounts for
14	14	approximately two-thirds of the direct financial aid awarded to
15	15	Texas students pursuing higher education; since 1979, working in
16	16	concert with school and lender colleagues, TG has assisted in the
17	17	delivery of more than 13 million student loans to over four million
18	18	student and parent borrowers, with no cost to the State of Texas;
19	19	the total value of those loans exceeds $62 billion; and
20	20	WHEREAS, In addition to successfully administering the
21	21	largest student aid program in Texas, TG has initiated a variety of
22	22	services to support student access to postsecondary education; to
23	23	make information about financial aid more readily available, the
24	24	agency has launched a hotline, hosts an annual statewide telethon,
25	25	and has developed two websites that provide a comprehensive
26	26	treatment of financial aid and ancillary topics, such as career
27	27	planning and financial literacy; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Student financial aid professionals benefit from
29	29	on-site training provided by TG to keep them abreast of the relevant
30	30	federal laws and regulations, as well as to assist them with issues
31	31	that are pertinent to their mission; this outstanding agency has
32	32	also created programs to provide supplemental, need-based
33	33	scholarships to students and to award grants for projects that
34	34	promote access to, and participation in, postsecondary education;
35	35	and
36	36	WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation plays
37	37	a vital role in fostering an educated citizenry and in helping
38	38	Texans to realize their dreams, and in so doing, the organization is
39	39	contributing to the future of the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
40	40	be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
42	42	hereby commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of the
43	43	Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and extend sincere
44	44	appreciation to its board of directors and staff for their
45	45	exceptional commitment and achievements; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
47	47	prepared for the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation as an
48	48	expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and
49	49	Senate.
