H.C.R. No. 159 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009; and WHEREAS, Established as a public nonprofit organization by the Texas Legislature in 1979, TG was created to administer a guaranteed student loan program that would help qualified Texans receive a postsecondary education and also to provide related services; and WHEREAS, Among the loan programs that TG administers is the Federal Family Education Loan Program, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of the direct financial aid awarded to Texas students pursuing higher education; since 1979, working in concert with school and lender colleagues, TG has assisted in the delivery of more than 13 million student loans to over four million student and parent borrowers, with no cost to the State of Texas; the total value of those loans exceeds $62 billion; and WHEREAS, In addition to successfully administering the largest student aid program in Texas, TG has initiated a variety of services to support student access to postsecondary education; to make information about financial aid more readily available, the agency has launched a hotline, hosts an annual statewide telethon, and has developed two websites that provide a comprehensive treatment of financial aid and ancillary topics, such as career planning and financial literacy; and WHEREAS, Student financial aid professionals benefit from on-site training provided by TG to keep them abreast of the relevant federal laws and regulations, as well as to assist them with issues that are pertinent to their mission; this outstanding agency has also created programs to provide supplemental, need-based scholarships to students and to award grants for projects that promote access to, and participation in, postsecondary education; and WHEREAS, The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation plays a vital role in fostering an educated citizenry and in helping Texans to realize their dreams, and in so doing, the organization is contributing to the future of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas hereby commemorate the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation and extend sincere appreciation to its board of directors and staff for their exceptional commitment and achievements; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
