H.R. No. 647 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Renowned Texas quarterback Vince Young is in the midst of a promising professional career as a member of the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League, and his return to the Lone Star State during the 2009 off-season provides a welcome opportunity to pay tribute to his exceptional achievements; and WHEREAS, A Houston native, Mr. Young first gained widespread attention while at James Madison High School; a commanding presence as quarterback of the Marlins, he was named the Texas High School Player of the Year in 2001 and was recruited by top college teams throughout the nation; and WHEREAS, Choosing to play college ball at The University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Young took over at quarterback as a redshirt freshman and went on to post a career record of 30 wins and just two losses as the Longhorns' starter; equally dangerous as a passer and a runner, he also proved himself an assured leader with an undeniable will to win; his determination was made unmistakably clear in the 2006 Rose Bowl, when he engineered an astounding late-game comeback and scored the winning touchdown on a dramatic eight-yard run with just 19 seconds on the clock to give UT the national championship; and WHEREAS, This phenomenal athlete was drafted in the first round by the Tennessee Titans in 2006, and he wasted little time in proving that he had what it takes to be a star in the NFL; he took charge of the team in the fourth game of the season, and by the end of the 2006 campaign, he had transformed a struggling squad into a contender that just narrowly missed the playoffs; in recognition of his inspired play, he was named the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year; and WHEREAS, In 2007, Mr. Young took up where he left off, helping his team to post a record of ten wins and six losses and guiding them to a spot in postseason play; he racked up impressive personal statistics along the way, passing for more than 2,500 yards and running for nearly 400; though he was slowed by an injury in 2008, Mr. Young is looking forward to further NFL glory in the seasons ahead, and he may rest assured that his successes will be heartily celebrated by the many Texans who proudly support this great Lone Star quarterback; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby honor Vince Young for his outstanding play at the college and professional levels and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Young as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
