| 11 | 11 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 12 | 12 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | amended by adding Section 662.056 to read as follows: |

| 14 | 14 | | Sec. 662.056. AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE DAY. (a) The last |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Friday in September is American Indian Heritage Day in recognition |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | of the historic, cultural, and social contributions American Indian |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | communities and leaders have made to this state. |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (b) American Indian Heritage Day shall be regularly |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | observed by appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs in the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | public schools and other places to honor American Indians in this |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | state and to celebrate the rich traditional and contemporary |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | American Indian culture. |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
