88 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
99 AN ACT
1010 relating to authorizing certain current and former members of the
1111 state legislature to conduct a marriage ceremony.
1212 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1313 SECTION 1. Section 2.202, Family Code, is amended by
1414 amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (a-1) to read as
1515 follows:
1616 (a) The following persons are authorized to conduct a
1717 marriage ceremony:
1818 (1) a licensed or ordained Christian minister or
1919 priest;
2020 (2) a Jewish rabbi;
2121 (3) a person who is an officer of a religious
2222 organization and who is authorized by the organization to conduct a
2323 marriage ceremony; [and]
2424 (4) a justice of the supreme court, judge of the court
2525 of criminal appeals, justice of the courts of appeals, judge of the
2626 district, county, and probate courts, judge of the county courts at
2727 law, judge of the courts of domestic relations, judge of the
2828 juvenile courts, retired justice or judge of those courts, justice
2929 of the peace, retired justice of the peace, judge of a municipal
3030 court, or judge or magistrate of a federal court of this state;
3131 (5) a current member of the state legislature who has
3232 served as a member of the legislature for not less than 20 years; or
3333 (6) a former member of the state legislature who
3434 served as a member of the legislature for not less than 20 years.
3535 (a-1) A person authorized to conduct a marriage ceremony
3636 under Subsection (a)(5) or (6) may not conduct more than 12 marriage
3737 ceremonies in a 12-month period.
3838 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
