SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 748
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Mary Mendoza, who was recently named the 2015 Texas
Social Worker of the Year by The University of Texas at Austin
School of Social Work; and
WHEREAS, Mary Mendoza grew up in a migrant family, and she
has served as a migrant and parent specialist in the Weslaco
Independent School District for 20 years; she was unaware that her
peers in the district nominated her for the prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, Mary is an outstanding administrator who has
gained a reputation for excellence due to the many programs she
has created and helmed to meet the unique needs of migrant
children; in addition to migrant programs, she has also managed
the federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools program; and
WHEREAS, During her years with the district, graduation
rates for migrant students have increased by approximately 40
percent; the Texas Education Agency has recognized the Weslaco
Migrant Department for Best Practices, and in 2008, Mary was
recognized as the Migrant Administrator of the Year at the Migrant
State Conference; and
WHEREAS, Mary Mendoza is an inspiration to many and a source
of pride for the Weslaco Independent School District, and she is
indeed deserving of recognition for her exceptional accomplishments;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby commend Mary Mendoza on her dedication to
her work on behalf of migrant students and congratulate her on
being honored with the 2015 Texas Social Worker of the Year
award; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
