| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Galveston County in celebrating March 1, |

| 4 | 4 | | 2017, as Galveston County Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1836, Galveston County played an |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | important role in the state's storied history; for many years, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the City of Galveston was the largest city in the Republic of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Texas and a center of commerce and culture; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, With its thriving industrial complex and two major |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | deep-water ports, Galveston County contributes significantly to |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the state's economy; it is the most popular coastal tourism |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | destination in Texas, and its beautiful shores attract more than |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | six million visitors each year; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Galveston County is widely known as a hub for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | excellence in higher education; it is home to The University of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Texas Medical Branch, an international leader in education, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | patient care, and research in areas including infectious disease |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and vaccine development; it is also home to the Texas A&M |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | University at Galveston Department of Marine Sciences, the Gulf |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Coast's leading marine science institution; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The people of Galveston County have worked hard to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | sustain their thriving community over the years, and they can |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | indeed look forward to a bright and prosperous future while |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | embracing their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Galveston County for |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | their many contributions to the growth and progress of our state |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and extend to them best wishes in all their endeavors; and, be |
|---|
