SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 333 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Galveston County in celebrating March 1, 2017, as Galveston County Day at the Capitol; and WHEREAS, Founded in 1836, Galveston County played an important role in the state's storied history; for many years, the City of Galveston was the largest city in the Republic of Texas and a center of commerce and culture; and WHEREAS, With its thriving industrial complex and two major deep-water ports, Galveston County contributes significantly to the state's economy; it is the most popular coastal tourism destination in Texas, and its beautiful shores attract more than six million visitors each year; and WHEREAS, Galveston County is widely known as a hub for excellence in higher education; it is home to The University of Texas Medical Branch, an international leader in education, patient care, and research in areas including infectious disease and vaccine development; it is also home to the Texas A&M University at Galveston Department of Marine Sciences, the Gulf Coast's leading marine science institution; and WHEREAS, The people of Galveston County have worked hard to sustain their thriving community over the years, and they can indeed look forward to a bright and prosperous future while embracing their rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Galveston County for their many contributions to the growth and progress of our state and extend to them best wishes in all their endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special day.
