| 3 | 3 | | Day at the State Capitol, and the occasion provides a fitting |

| 4 | 4 | | opportunity to recognize those associated with this notable |

| 5 | 5 | | institution; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1974, the University of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Houston-Downtown boasts more than 50,000 alumni and provides |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | academic and career preparation for undergraduate and graduate |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | students in an area that is home to a quarter of the Texas |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | population; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The university educates approximately 14,000 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | students annually with over 3,000 baccalaureate degrees awarded |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in 44 areas of study each year; the university offers 8 masters |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | degrees, including a top-ranked MBA program, as well as 18 online |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | degree-completion opportunities, two of which are ranked among |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the nation's best by U.S. News and World Report; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The university has strengthened its partnerships |

| 18 | 18 | | with area community colleges, allowing for greater transferability |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for students who wish to earn degrees at the university; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The student body at the University of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Houston-Downtown is representative of the vibrant city of |

| 22 | 22 | | Houston, with large numbers of first-generation college students, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | returning adults, and transfer students; the university has |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | earned federal designations as a Hispanic-Serving Institution |

| 25 | 25 | | and a Minority-Serving Institution, and it is also recognized as |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | a Military Friendly School; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of |

| 28 | 28 | | Houston-Downtown has offered an affordable education, providing |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | its students with outstanding educational prospects and a strong |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | foundation for the future while fostering an inclusive, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | equitable, and welcoming campus environment, and in so doing, it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | has played an important role in the cultural and economic |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | advancement of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as University |

| 36 | 36 | | of Houston-Downtown Day at the State Capitol and extend to the |
