SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 273
WHEREAS, February 26, 2019, is University of Houston-Downtown
Day at the State Capitol, and the occasion provides a fitting
opportunity to recognize those associated with this notable
institution; and
WHEREAS, Established in 1974, the University of
Houston-Downtown boasts more than 50,000 alumni and provides
academic and career preparation for undergraduate and graduate
students in an area that is home to a quarter of the Texas
population; and
WHEREAS, The university educates approximately 14,000
students annually with over 3,000 baccalaureate degrees awarded
in 44 areas of study each year; the university offers 8 masters
degrees, including a top-ranked MBA program, as well as 18 online
degree-completion opportunities, two of which are ranked among
the nation's best by U.S. News and World Report; and
WHEREAS, The university has strengthened its partnerships
with area community colleges, allowing for greater transferability
for students who wish to earn degrees at the university; and
WHEREAS, The student body at the University of
Houston-Downtown is representative of the vibrant city of
Houston, with large numbers of first-generation college students,
returning adults, and transfer students; the university has
earned federal designations as a Hispanic-Serving Institution
and a Minority-Serving Institution, and it is also recognized as
a Military Friendly School; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of
Houston-Downtown has offered an affordable education, providing
its students with outstanding educational prospects and a strong
foundation for the future while fostering an inclusive,
equitable, and welcoming campus environment, and in so doing, it
has played an important role in the cultural and economic
advancement of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2019, as University
of Houston-Downtown Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
visiting delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and
enjoyable stay in Austin.
