7 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Gifted and talented education supports the academic |
---|
8 | 13 | | needs of students with a high potential for achievement, and the |
---|
9 | 14 | | observance of Gifted and Talented Students Week in April provides |
---|
10 | 15 | | an opportunity to celebrate the skills and accomplishments of these |
---|
11 | 16 | | students and the dedication of the educators who serve them; and |
---|
12 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The term "gifted and talented" refers to children |
---|
13 | 18 | | and youth who have excelled in intellectual, creative, or artistic |
---|
14 | 19 | | endeavors, who possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or who |
---|
15 | 20 | | show promise in a specific field of study; due to their unique |
---|
16 | 21 | | abilities, these students can benefit from specialized educational |
---|
17 | 22 | | services designed to meet their social, emotional, and academic |
---|
18 | 23 | | needs; and |
---|
19 | 24 | | WHEREAS, There are more than 450,000 identified gifted and |
---|
20 | 25 | | talented students in Texas; funding is set aside to help provide |
---|
21 | 26 | | them with challenging coursework, and teachers of gifted and |
---|
22 | 27 | | talented classes are required by Texas law to receive additional |
---|
23 | 28 | | special training; and |
---|
24 | 29 | | WHEREAS, By encouraging exceptional students to develop |
---|
25 | 30 | | their individual strengths, we are investing in the leaders, |
---|
26 | 31 | | scholars, and innovators of tomorrow, and this vital endeavor is |
---|
27 | 32 | | deserving of the wholehearted support and commitment of all Texans; |
---|
28 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |

29 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
30 | 35 | | hereby designate the first full week in April as Gifted and Talented |
---|
31 | 36 | | Students Week; and, be it further |

32 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |

33 | 38 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |

34 | 39 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
