611 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
712 WHEREAS, Gifted and talented education supports the academic
813 needs of students with a high potential for achievement, and the
914 observance of Gifted and Talented Students Week in April provides
1015 an opportunity to celebrate the skills and accomplishments of these
1116 students and the dedication of the educators who serve them; and
1217 WHEREAS, The term "gifted and talented" refers to children
1318 and youth who have excelled in intellectual, creative, or artistic
1419 endeavors, who possess an unusual capacity for leadership, or who
1520 show promise in a specific field of study; due to their unique
1621 abilities, these students can benefit from specialized educational
1722 services designed to meet their social, emotional, and academic
1823 needs; and
1924 WHEREAS, There are more than 450,000 identified gifted and
2025 talented students in Texas; funding is set aside to help provide
2126 them with challenging coursework, and teachers of gifted and
2227 talented classes are required by Texas law to receive additional
2328 special training; and
2429 WHEREAS, By encouraging exceptional students to develop
2530 their individual strengths, we are investing in the leaders,
2631 scholars, and innovators of tomorrow, and this vital endeavor is
2732 deserving of the wholehearted support and commitment of all Texans;
2833 now, therefore, be it
2934 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3035 hereby designate the first full week in April as Gifted and Talented
3136 Students Week; and, be it further
3237 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3338 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3439 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
3540 passed by the legislature.
