2023 Assembly Joint Resolution 42
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: honoring the life and public service of Representative Sheryl Albers.
Whereas, Representative Sheryl Albers, a dedicated public servant and loving wife, mother, and
grandmother passed away on May 28, 2022 at the age of 67; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was born on September 9, 1954, as the second of eight children to Marcus
and Norma Gumz, and grew up in Baraboo, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers graduated from Baraboo High School and went on to attend Carroll
University and earned her bachelor’s degree in Art from Ripon College; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was a proud farmer, having grown up on her family’s farm and returning to
work at her family’s farm following college growing mint and soybeans before becoming a dairy farmer;
and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 1991 in a special election, and
served the people of the 50th Assembly District for 18 years until she retired in 2009; and
Whereas, during her time in the assembly, Sheryl Albers served as the chair for several committees
including the Elections and Constitutional Law Committee and the Property Rights and Land Management
Committee, and she served as a member of the Joint Committee on Finance for several sessions; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was a fierce advocate for the agriculture community and worked on issues
affecting agriculture including property rights, rural economic development, and land use and zoning; and
Whereas, while serving as a representative, Sheryl Albers attended the University of Wisconsin Law
School and earned her J.D. in 2004; and
Whereas, following her service in the assembly, Sheryl Albers practiced law, which included working
for the Juneau County District Attorney’s Office and the Wisconsin Supreme Court in the Office of Lawyer
Regulation, and worked in human resources at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was recognized for her hard work and contributions to the farming
community, having served as a member on the Sauk County Farm Bureau Board, being named Sauk
County’s Miss Farm Bureau, recognized as an Outstanding Young Farmer, and being a member of several
agricultural associations including being a founding member of the Sauk County Women in
Agriculture−Eagle Bluff Chapter; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers had many talents and hobbies including being a talented seamstress, creating
craft gifts, traveling and appreciating art from around the world, enjoying the company of friends and
hosting dinners, and she earned her private pilot’s license and owned a Terratorn Ultralight aircraft; and
Whereas, Sheryl Albers was a loving wife to her husband, Steve, and a mother to her son, Joel, and
four stepchildren, Kelly, Devon, Megan, and Tyler, and grandmother to seven grandchildren; and
Whereas, Representative Sheryl Albers is remembered fondly for her strong work ethic, faith,
kindness, and service to her state and community; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin Legislature
honor the life and public service of Representative Sheryl Albers and extend their condolences to her family
and friends.
