An act relating to Alzheimer's disease and related 2 
dementia training for law enforcement and correctional 3 
officers; creating s. 943.17299, F.S.; requiring the 4 
Department of Law Enforcement to establish an online, 5 
continued employment training component relating to 6 
Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia; 7 
requiring that the training component be developed 8 
with the Department of Elder Affairs; specifying 9 
instruction requirements for the training component; 10 
authorizing the completion of such training to count 11 
toward a certain requirement; providing an effective 12 
date. 13

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 15 
 16 
 Section 1.  Section 943 .17299, Florida Statutes, is created 17 
to read: 18 
 943.17299  Continued employment training relating to 19 
Alzheimer's disease and related forms of dementia. —The 20 
department shall establish an online, continued employment 21 
training component relating to Alzheimer's disease and related 22 
forms of dementia. The training component must be developed in 23 
consultation with the Department of Elder Affairs and must 24 
include, but need not be limited to, instruction on interacting 25

with persons with Alzheimer's disease or a relate d form of 26 
dementia, including instruction on techniques for recognizing 27 
behavioral symptoms and characteristics, effective 28 
communication, employing the use of alternatives to physical 29 
restraints, and identifying signs of abuse, neglect, or 30 
exploitation. Completion of the training component may count 31 
toward the 40 hours of instruction for continued employment or 32 
appointment as a law enforcement officer, correctional officer, 33 
or correctional probation officer required under s. 943.135. 34 
 Section 2.  This act shall take effect October 1, 2024. 35
